What we do

Downpatrick Resource centre is a day support service for adults over the age of 18 with enduring mental health needs, as well as carers and relatives.

The aim of the service is to adopt a strengths-based approach in order to maximise service users’ independence, choice and control. Inclusion and involvement are the key aspects of the service provided both in terms of being included in the decision-making processes within the centre and becoming involved in our local communities.

Activities we offer

The centre offers a range of service user led/needs led activities based in-house and in the local community. These include:

  • WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) programmes

  • Gardening and horticulture

  • Walking group, gym groups and leisure

  • Cook It! Programmes

  • Arts & crafts

  • History projects (in partnership with with Down Museum) and reading and discussion groups.

Service users and encouraged and empowered to get involved in all aspects of the service and take the lead in monthly meetings to review the programme of activities and plan ahead.

Service users can also access a MindWise advocate, who is based in the service and who can advise and provide support with welfare benefits, housing, their treatment and more.

The service also has a dedicated carers’ support service and can provide one to one support to carers in the community, and through peer support groups which are conducted in the centre on a fortnightly basis. Carers support can also be offered through weekly sessions in the acute admission ward in Downe hospital.

Areas we cover

The service covers the mid Down area.

How can I be referred?

Referrals to the service can be made through the local community mental health team, hospital, or from a psychologist. Self-referrals cannot be accepted.
