"What happened to me?" Understanding Best Practice from Lived Experience of Borderline Personality Disorder

OVERVIEW: This is a Pilot Program – presenting working title, aims and objectives

 

MindWise are very excited to launch a peer led approach to understanding Borderline Personality Disorder. This course has been developed by people with direct experience of living with Borderline Personality Disorder and who believe their voice and the voice of many others with direct experience will support and enable you as a professional to enhance your practice and develop a greater understanding of individuals lived experiences. 

 

This two day learning and development course aims to provide delegates with: 

 

  • An understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder. 
  • An appreciation of individuals lived experiences to include co- morbid conditions and impact. 
  • An understanding of the strategic context and frameworks in Northern Ireland. 
  • Insight into causation and theoretical practices e.g. attachment; biosocial; trauma. 
  • Recognition of the power of validation and the impact of stigma and attitudes. 
  • An understanding of the principles of Recovery as they relate to lived experiences e.g. Personal Agency.

The programme is suitable for any service/staff who work with people experiencing BPD

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE 

 

The Programme will be delivered face to face and the course is designed to be interactive and participatory. Course timings are 9.30 am – 4 pm and refreshments are included. 

 

COST 

 

The Cost of this Programme is £100 per head. (Reduced price for pilot)

 

FACILITATORS 

 

The Programme will be Co- facilitated by:- 

 

Nicole Devlin: a BSc Hons Psychology student at Queen’s university. Nicole has had an extensive history of self-harm, borderline personality disorder, amongst long term psychiatric inpatient treatment. Nicole uses her experiences to give insight into the subject areas. 

 

Caitriona Morgan: a survivor of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder' and life in general. Student, campaigner, activist; committed to promoting human rights particularly for those unable to advocate for themselves'. 

 

Karen Bester: is undertaking postgraduate research on the impact of Recovery Colleges and is Lead Peer Educator for the Belfast hub of a new cross-border Recovery College. A published and award-winning writer, Karen has a diagnosis of BPD and bipolar disorder with psychotic features. She lives in South Belfast with her partner, their young son and two cats. 

 

Patricia (Trish) Mason: A previous Volunteer Peer Advocate for the SEHSCT and a current active member of the NI Regional PD Network. Trish has had an abundant history of both Tier1 and Tier 2 Mental Health Services. A more recent cathartic diagnosis of BPD confirmed her struggle and finally there were answers - Diagnosis not only granted validation and reasoning but unlocked a new road to knowledge and self discovery. Enlightenment with the right help, support and therapy Recovery is accessible.
