Background

The origins of the national organisation which we used to belong to go back to 1972 when John Pringle wrote a letter to The Times about the plight of families coping with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. This led to a meeting of concerned relatives and carers in London and later the National Schizophrenia Fellowship (NSF) was founded. The aim was very much that of mutual support and learning about developments in treatment.

In the late 1970s Sarah Huey called a similar meeting in Belfast and established a group here which later became the Northern Ireland region of NSF. Similar developments took place in Scotland and Wales and the NSF became a nationwide organisation.
