No Health Without Mental Health

A cross-government mental health outcomes strategy for people of all ages

MindWise support the Governments strategy ‘No Health without mental Health’. This month a year ago(Feb. 2011) the government sets out six shared objectives to improve the mental health and well-being of the nation, and to improve outcomes for people with mental health problems through high quality services. It supports the Government's aim of achieving parity of esteem between physical and mental health. The interconnections between mental health, housing, employment, and the criminal justice system are stressed. MindWise offers it’s support and committment to this ambitious strategic intent which we believe our own plans for 2012 – 2017 will help to achieve (see our Business Planning section)

‘..Government recognises that our mental health is central to our quality of life, central to our economic success and interdependent with our success in improving education, training and employment outcomes and tackling some of the persistent problems that scar our society, from homelessness, violence and abuse, to drug use and crime’.

No Health Without Mental Health, expects parity of esteem between mental and physical health services. The approach aims to improve outcomes for all.

At least one in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our life, and around half of people with lifetime mental health problems experience their first symptoms by the age of 14. By promoting good mental health and intervening early, particularly in the crucial childhood and teenage years, we can help to prevent mental illness from developing and mitigate its effects when it does. So this strategy takes a life course approach, recognising that the foundations for lifelong wellbeing are already being laid down before birth, and that there is much we can do to protect and promote wellbeing and resilience through our early years, into adulthood and then on into a healthy old age. Only a sustained approach across the life course will equip us to meet the social, economic and environmental challenges we face and deliver the short- and long-term benefits we need.
