Wheels of Fire for Local Good Causes

Fire Fighters from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Eastern Area got on their bikes at a recent Spin Cycle fundraiser which took place at Tesco Carrickfergus in order to raise funds for 3 worthy local causes.

Fire fighters from various stations within the Eastern Area which includes; Westland, Springfield, Cadogan, Central, Knock and Whitla stations and also from the local Carrickfegus station, took turns to cycle at marathon cycle session in the store starting at 6.00pm on the evening of Thursday 22nd October 2010 going right through the night until 6.00pm on Friday 23rd April 2010.

The Spin Cycle is the first of a series of events that crew from the stations in the Eastern Area have planned during the year to raise money jointly for Cruse Bereavement Care, Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children and MindWise.

Cruse Bereavement Care exists to promote the well-being of bereaved people and to enable anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children is a charity which offers practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people who are living with cancer and their families. MindWise is a local mental health charity offering support and services to individuals affected by severe mental illness and other mental health difficulties.

The series of fundraisers are being organised by Noel McKee a fire fighter at Whitla station. Throughout the coming months, Noel and other members of NIFRS intend to take part in or organise a range of activities to raise money for the 3 causes. Currently they are planning to take part in the Islandmagee Challenge taking place on the 26th of June and they are also currently planning other fundraisers later in the year including a Fire Engine pull, a sponsored cycle and a sponsored car wash.
